Japan wants end to Net anonymity

我想日本是想要教育人說, 用自己的名字才是好的, prove that you’re not ashamed of your own name and that you’re proud of it.

Japan wants end to Net anonymity
16:50 AEST Wed Jun 29 2005

Japan is encouraging people to use their real names when writing articles or posting information on the internet to help reduce crimes that are committed due to the Net’s anonymity.

The Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications will incorporate a set of measures for the campaign in a final report its “information frontier” study panel is set to release later this week, the sources said.

Among measures being envisaged are asking elementary and junior high schools across Japan to use blogs and so-called social networking sites, both considered less anonymous than others, in their education, the sources said.

The communications ministry will work out details on these measures in cooperation with the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science, and Technology, they said.

The government has decided to launch the campaign as internet users can easily access information deemed harmful for youth via the Net, such as how to make a bomb and recommending group suicides.

The communications ministry has judged it necessary to encourage people to turn to internet sites with less anonymity in order to reduce Net-related crimes, the sources said.

In its report, the information frontier study panel is expected to propose schools teach children “morals” in the use of internet to make them feel like expressing their views under their real names.

These students are discouraged from taking advantage of useful information means made available at the Net to make themselves understood, as many internet sites are highly anonymous, the panel will say.

The ministry will also call on municipalities to actively use social networking sites to revitalise regional economies, the sources said.

The use of real names has become more common in South Korea and the practice helped prevent Net-related crimes in the country, according to the communications ministry.
