Humans, robots to soon coexist in Japan
Wednesday Feb 1 15:49 AEDT
As depicted in famous anime films featuring heroes like Astroboy and Doraemon, a world where humans and robots can coexist is drawing near as robot development is rapidly progressing in the service industry amid the declining birthrate and growing concerns about security.
A 1.3m tall humanoid robot named ‘enon’ stood in front of the large supermarket Aeon Yachiyo Midorigaoka Shopping Centre in Yachiyo, Chiba Prefecture, during the year-end sales season.
Enon, designed by Fujitsu Ltd., not only helped attract customers but also provided services, said officials of Aeon Co, which operates the supermarket.
The company wanted to see what kind of tasks enon could perform, and based on this trial run in Yachiyo, they have decided to use more robots.
In October at Secom Co’s headquarters in Tokyo, a self-propelled four-wheeled robot, which is 1.2m long and 1.1m high, sprayed a large cloud of white smoke and made a loud noise when a suspicious person approached.
The major security company is using the robot – Secom Robot X – to patrol and watch large premises such as schools and factories.
Equipped with a sensor and a camera, the robot keeps and eye out for intruders. It can also be used to extinguish a fire as it is equipped with a flame sensor and fire extinguisher.
Although the robot costs Y300,000 ($A3,400) to rent per month and at least Y4.5 million ($A51,000) must be spent to design a route for it to patrol, it is still cheaper than hiring around-the-clock security guards.
At the Roppongi Hills complex in downtown Tokyo, a cleaning robot – RFS-1 – begins making the rounds close to midnight. The 1-metre-tall robot was designed by Fuji Heavy Industries Ltd.
Using an infrared remote-control device, the robot can take the elevators so it can clean each floor. Similar robots are being used at Narita airport and Chuo University.
The Fuji Chimera Research Institute, a private market research company, said the market for these types of robots made up Y7 billion ($A80 million) in 2004 and will expand to Y55 billion ($A625 million) in 2010.
This growth will be based on a bigger lineup and lower prices. Like dish washers and dryers, which became popularised about 40 years after being first marketed, the robots will eventually become commonplace through widespread sales.
