Aust-US dollar parity could be on the horizon

Economists say the Australian dollar could reach parity with the US dollar at the start of next year, after the local currency hit more than 90 US cents overnight.
Earlier today the Aussie dollar was trading at 90.15 US cents, which is a 23-year high.
Senior interest rates strategist with ANZ, Sally Auld, says there is no reason the Australian dollar can not catch up to the US currency in the months ahead.
“What we’re really looking at now is probably a sustained break of the 90 cents level for the Aussie dollar,” she said.
“Most people are probably saying it’ll get to around 92, 93 against the US dollar, but maybe the one thing we should really be starting to consider at the moment is whether we’re going to see it reach parity with the US dollar over the next three to six months.”
The dollar has been boosted by a rise in commodity prices and stronger than expected jobs growth in the United States, which have eased concerns of a recession in the US.
“We’re seeing a very weak US dollar at the moment, that’s probably the most major factor,” she said.
“We’re also seeing very high commodity prices, we’re seeing a strong, domestic economy here in Australia and also we’re seeing risk appetite back in global financial markets.
“We saw US share markets hit a record high on Friday night and that’s also very supportive of the Australian dollar.”
