This afternoon we went to see a Queensland Youth Choir (QYC) performance. This is the third or fourth time I’ve been to their shows. The previous QYC shows I went to were the Gala night and the the Police Commissioner’s Christmas Carols.

I really enjoyed the beginning when the Stella Voce choir performed their song. The choreography suits the song well. Then we had the Bambino Music group come up… Basically, it’s a “baby’s choir”. Mum’s and dad’s standing on the stage with their kids/babies (I think one of them were 14 months old??) I could swear that I saw a baby fall asleep during the performance…. :S

The Poco Voco group performance was alright. But I didn’t like it how it was an adult singing most of the part, and the kids were only singing the chorus. Maybe that was how it was meant to be, but it wasn’t that great… Somehow I don’t remember much about the Vivace Voices group…

The Voice Works choir is by far the best I’ve ever seen - both the singing and choreography are outstanding. In Channel 7’s “Battle of the Choirs” earlier this year, Voice Works was a semi finalist in the competition.

Overall, I think the show wasn’t as good as the Gala night I went last year. With today’s “Red Earth” show, they had the choirs from Cannon Hill Anglican College also performing. OMG how terrible were they… they’re not singing properly and the volume was too low. And, they have no manners at all. There were people chatting or whispering to each other on stage during the performance and when the audience were clapping their hands. They move around a lot, making weird faces. With one of their choirs, like 10 people coughed right before a song, and they thought it was really funny. Come on, this is a public performance people. I didn’t pay to watch this kinda sh*t.

I guess the moral of this means that if it’s not a pure QYC performance, be prepared that you might be disappointed and would want a refund. At the end of the show, all choirs sang the same songs (QYC + Cannon Hill). It was very obvious that QYC can sing so much better.

It’s not that I love to criticize, but today’s show made me feel that it was kinda a waste of time… Towards the end of the show, a few people made speeches about QYC etc. “Lack of professionalism” is the phrase I’d use to describe it. With this being a public show, way too much “private jokes” were used in the speeches. Of course there were people in the audience who laughed since their friends were on stage. So if you’re not in their circle, you won’t know what they’re on about.

Nevertheless, the QYC performances were still really good, minus the baby group, Cannon Hill group and private speeches parts.

I look forward to attending the QYC Gala night later this year.
