Are Women Unhappier Than Men?

In childhood days, I remember that one of the “hot topics” we often ask is, “Would you rather be a boy or a girl?” As for myself, I’m happy to be female as I already am. Most guys I know seem to be happy that they’re guys too. The differences between male and female is not just physical, but we’re also different in the way we do and think about things.

During the earlier years of life (0~25), the lives of males and females are the generally same - until they get married and start having children. In most cases, women would need to take time off work to take care of their children, whereas men can (or need to) continue working. Depending on whether the woman is career-focused or not, needing to take time off may affect her general “life satisfaction” - as if something’s missing in her life. Even if she loves her family, she may find that 90% of her time now needs to be devoted to her children. The difference in priorities and time allocation may affect her perceived quality of life.

The article below explains more on this.

Gender: Women End Up Unhappier Than Men
(from MEDICA.de)

Less able to achieve their life goals, women end up unhappier than men later in life – even though they start out happier, new research reveals.
31/07/2008

Married with money: that seems to be the direct way to happiness; © SXCThe study used nationally representative data spanning several decades to examine the role of unfulfilled desires in a person’s sense of well-being. Thus, it covers expectations of success and demographic compositions of different generations.

In their analysis, the researchers control for birth cohort and demographic characteristics such as race and education. They find that women are, on average, happier than men in early adulthood – but the glow wears off with time. Specifically, after the age of 48, men’s overall happiness exceeds women’s happiness.

These gender patterns of overall happiness correlate to patterns in two significant aspects of life satisfaction: family and finances. In later life, it is men who come closer to fulfilling their aspirations and, thus, are happier.

Women and men have fairly similar life goals when it comes to love, the study reveals. Nine out of ten people of both genders reach adult life wanting a happy marriage. The saddest period of the average man’s life –when he is in his 20’s– is also the period when he is most likely to be single.

Google Street View across Australia - Pros and Cons

Oh no to privacy… Google Street View is finally released in Australia… Just click on the Street View button on Google Maps and you’ll see it in work. I really don’t know whether it’s a good thing or not to have such a technology launched in our neighbourhoods…

Now, from a regular Queenslander’s point of view…

Some negative points:

  • Say a thief wants to rob a house, he/she no longer needs to physically walk around the neighbourhood to observe the environment - because they can now do it virtually online using Google Street View. If they were to physically walk around, at least there’s a chance that someone would spot any odd activity. But now it’s like they can “walk” around the place invisibly.
  • There are screen captures of children playing in the front yard. This one can become a serious privacy issue. It’s nothing to do with whether or not you can see their faces. The problem is that the message “children live here” is now published worldwide.
  • Click here for Top 15 Google Street View Sightings - Some of these are quite funny :P But as you can see, even people walking in or out of adult shops were photographed. A thief in action was also photographed!
  • In the past, say if someone gives you an address of where they live. An address is an address, so what. But now with Street View, people can actually look up your address, not just to see where it is on the map (well, there’s a refidex in nearly every car so that’s nothing private), but now they can actually see the HOUSE and the neighbourhood you live in; hence they can “judge” you by looking at what type of house you live in. Will this become a cause for discrimination or bullying?

Of course, if there are negative points, there has to be positive points too:

  • It’s good to know that we now have the technology to virtually “tour” everywhere using the computer. It’s one more step towards the future.
  • When you need to go to an address, as you drive on the street, you don’t need to slow down trying to read the number on each house - because you’ve already seen how the house looks like using Google Street View.
  • From a real estate point of view, Street View can save tonnes of petrol. People no longer need to physically BE THERE to see a neighbourhood. They can see it first-hand online before deciding whether they want to actually GO to and review the neighbourhood or not.

Any other pros and cons?
