About three-fourths of US adults believe that the Internet has made it easier to start a small business, according to a new survey commissioned by Yahoo! Small Business and conducted by Harris Interactive.

Over 70% of those surveyed also said that they have considered starting their own business. The survey found that entrepreneurship is attractive for a variety of reasons. About one-quarter of the respondents wanted to work in a business that they loved, and another one-quarter wanted to be their own boss. Others said they wanted to make more money, while some simply were attracted to the challenge of a start-up.

The Net has become an essential tool for those at the helm of small businesses. A report by OPEN: The Small Business Network from American Express found that over 80% of small businesses use the Internet to conduct business activities.

In addition, the percentage of US small businesses that use the Internet to conduct e-business jumped between 2003 and 2004, rising from 22% to 73%. In 2005, it is predicted that this percentage will rise to 82%.

Once a small business has a Web site up, the benefits continue, according to small business leaders surveyed by Interland. Over 80% of respondents said that their Web site generated leads for their business, 77% said they believed that a Web site helped to make them more competitive, and 55% said an Internet presence helped them through the economic downturn of recent years.

Is e-mail bad for your mental health? A new UK study has some surprising conclusions about the ramifications of living in the information age.

A survey of 1,100 Britons, conducted by TNS Research, and sponsored by Hewlett Packard, found that far from empowering workers, modern communications — phone calls, e-mails and text messages — distracted them and actually caused them to suffer a greater loss of IQ than if they were smoking marijuana.

The robots are coming. And when they get here, they will take out the trash.

Mobile, intelligent robots that can perform tasks usually reserved for humans are starting to creep into mainstream society and could become a multibillion-dollar market in a few years.

iRobot says it has sold hundreds of thousands of units of the Roomba, a self-guided, self-propelled vacuum cleaner that sells for around $200, in just one year.

Society might work against his kind of genius

Will there ever be another Einstein? This is the undercurrent of conversation at Einstein memorial meetings throughout the year. A new Einstein will emerge, scientists say. But it may take a long time. After all, more than 200 years separated Einstein from his nearest rival, Isaac Newton.

Many physicists say the next Einstein hasn’t been born yet, or is a baby now. That’s because the quest for a unified theory that would account for all the forces of nature has pushed current mathematics to its limits. New math must be created before the problem can be solved.

But researchers say there are many other factors working against another Einstein emerging anytime soon.

For one thing, physics is a much different field today. In Einstein’s day, there were a few thousand physicists worldwide, and the theoreticians who could intellectually spar with Einstein probably would fit into a streetcar with seats to spare.
